KHIZ-TV Wins Emmy!

August 31st, 2007   |  Permalink

Independent broadcaster KHIZ-TV brought home its first-ever Emmy, at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ 59th annual Los Angeles-area awards, beating a strong field of major-network-affiliated competitors in the Arts and Culture/History category.

KHIZ-TV’s winning entry: “Behind the Lyrics,” a half-hour, music-driven documentary. It was the first Emmy for each of the members of the production team behind the show: director/producer A.J. Lewis, executive producers Garrett Law and Peter White, and co-producer Richard Janes.

“Behind The Lyrics” follows the soon-to-be star singer/songwriter Shawn Pander, 28, as he struggles to survive and succeed as an artist in today’s ruthless, hypercompetitive music industry. From the Pander’s initial inspirations for his songs to his inspired original musical performances, “Behind the Lyrics” tells the real-life story of one of today’s most talented emerging artists. The show features three original songs from Pander’s current album, Memories for Sale - “Dreamkiller,” “Don’t Change” and “Simplicity,” a trio of songs depicting the ups and downs of Pander’s love life and his life’s ambitions here in L.A.

Led by director/producer Lewis, KHIZ’s team shot the documentary on location in and around Los Angeles, hitting several renowned L.A. music scene spots, including Pander’s favorite regular venues: Viva Fresh in Burbank, and The Mint in Los Angeles, an intimate club known for nurturing many top musical talents. The production features interviews with Pander’s parents, childhood friends and the management team he left behind in Texas, as well as current producers, band members and loved ones.

Accepting the award, Law remarked that, like the story of the artist in “Behind the Lyrics” – “in Los Angeles success does not come easy…the story of someone struggling to make it is an important one and one we here can all identify with.”

Local Hispanic Americans Travel to Washington, DC

June 15th, 2007   |  Permalink

By Jacqueline Policastro

It’s another plea by Hispanic Americans.

Flanked by leading democratic lawmakers Hispanic radio star Eddie
“Piolin” Sotelo presented one million letters supporting a fair
solution to illegal immigration.

The letters were signed by U.S. citizens and legal residents and were
collected during Piolin’s cross-country tour from California to DC.

Maria Gonzalez joined the campaign hoping to secure amnesty for her
husband, a restaurant manager and illegal immigrant from Guatemala.

“I am a citizen but I cannot do anything for him right now because the
laws don’t permit because he came without documents,” said Gonzalez.

Democratic Congressman Joe Baca, chair of the Congressional Hispanic
Conference, welcomed the campaign as a testament to the American
dream.

“They will believe in what our Constitution stands forŠ justice,
equality, and opportunity,” he said. “For many individuals who have
come now and in the past into the United States we need to provide
that for them.”

As Congress continues to finalize details in a potential bill
lawmakers like Republican Congressman Howard Buck McKeon are split
between what is practical and what is fair.

“I think you have to start with no amnesty. People that have come into
the country illegally should not be put on a path to citizenship ahead
of people that have been waiting,” said McKeon.

As tensions over the immigration issue continue to rise throughout the
U.S. and in our nation’s capital the president is urging members of
Congress to “put aside political wrangling” and get something done.

2nd Annual Independent Television Festival

April 19th, 2007   |  Permalink

KHIZ is a proud supporter of the ITF; we will be covering the festival and playing winning video
submissions on the air.

Independent Television Festival 2007

In the early 90’s, the independent film industry took the world by storm and innovative pieces of art were created on little more than hard work and dedication to making something great. That change came out of necessity and availability. Now it is time for a similar movement in television. The inaugural year of the Independent Television Festival was a wild success, and now, in its second year, the ITVFest is poised to lead the charge into an exciting new era of television. The evolution will be televised.

To learn more about the festival and find out how to submit your own videos, visit the ITF website: http://www.itvfest.org/
